It’s Mister Donut To You!

Last month, I went to Taiwan for two weeks. It was my first visit in almost 20 years, so I decided to a) visit family and friends, b) buy lots of goodies, c) stuff myself silly with food. For those who have never been to Taiwan, the one thing you will find in abundance is food. In almost every corner, you will find restaurants, street vendors and 7-Elevens. If you think we have a lot of Starbucks in the US, you ain’t seen nothing until you see the ridiculous number of 7-Elevens in Taiwan. Some are literally across the street from each other. We’re not talking a block away or anything. We’re talking within a 30 second dash across the street.

Enough about 7-Eleven though. The whole point of this post is discuss the yumminess of Mister Donut donuts. (click here for a brief Mister Donut history). The reason I was so pumped about going there is because my sister had gone to Taiwan earlier this summer and simply RAVED about how good their donuts were. When it became my time to go to Taiwan, that was pretty much the first thing I wanted to eat.

One of my favorites is the chocolate dipped chocolate donut. Sounds redundant, doesn’t it? Please note that these aren’t their “official” names. I’m just describing them. My Mandarin reading abilities are next to non-existent, so you will just have to go with the names I give them. If you do know how to read Mandarin, I would recommend heading over to the website to get their real names. In any case, this chocolate dipped wonder may look very sweet (double chocolate) but it isn’t. Part of what I like about Mister Donut is that their donuts are fairly mild in sweetness, which gives my kidneys are break. (not to mention my waistline) I’m not saying you won’t gain weight eating these guys…I’m just saying, they more than likely have less sugar content than their American counterparts.

Another favorite is the glazed green tea “pon de rings” (thats what these oddly shaped donuts are called). It is lightly glazed to give it some sweetness and the dough is soft and moist (not mushy), giving it a slightly chewy consistency. The plain sugar coated pon de rings is pretty good too if you are not into unusual flavors. It has the same consistency as the green tea donuts.

Next up, the red bean filled green tea pon de rings…lets just say I wasn’t a big fan of those.

Finally, the more unusual flavor. There may be some folks that may gag at the thought, but here’s the….CURRY DONUT! Technically, its not a donut. It’s got a crispy flaky exterior (think coconut shrimp), filled with curry sauce and on the salty side.

Overall, this place has gotten me to actually think and crave donuts. It is just too bad that an All-American donut retailer is more popular overseas than in the States. I hear we have some floating around some of the 50 states…but I highly doubt their donuts even taste the same.
