What better way to start off the New Year than spend a week in Tokyo, Japan and enjoy its sights, people, shopping, and FOOD?!?!?! Before my trip, a buddy of mine told me that I HAVE to try Okonomiyaki. “The hell is that?” I asked. I wasn’t about to try any raw fish hearts or whatever it was. But he assured me that its basically Japanese Pizza where you’re able to add ingredients and cook yourself. Your way right away! Sure enough, I was able to find an Okonomiyaki restaurant and DAMN it was GOOD!
At first it doesn’t look like much. You get bowls with a bunch of veggies, some meat and an egg piled up neatly in a pancake-like batter. But as you cook the bacon and mix your bowl, you soon realize that your whole table smells damn good. You can also add several other “toppings” to your pizza as well. There is seafood, other meats, veggies, kimchi, noodles…pretty much anything. I went with something simpler since I didn’t know what to expect of the meal. Next time…I’ll definitely be more adventurous.

Once you are done mixing your ingredients, pour the entire bowl onto the hot skillet in front of you and place the bacon above the batter. My mouth was already watering at this point. I also burned myself. Don’t laugh!

You will want to let the “pizza” cook for a few minutes before you turn it over. Otherwise it’ll still be gooey and messy. So just chill and enjoy the sounds/aromas. Take a break and drink some Kirin and Sake while your pizza cooks. It’s a very fun and relaxing way to eat. It’s also quite filling. I didn’t think I’d get full but after a few slices of this stuff, you’ll want to take a nap.

Once it is golden brown on both sides, your Japanese Pizza is done! Lastly, you drizzle some Okonomiyaki sauce ontop and Voila! Again…Damn good meal! If you ever go to Japan, definitely try this. You’ll have fun and enjoy the food!

Thanks for dropping by my blog. Now that I read your about page, I think our blogs are very similar in nature. Glad to have found this blog. I love traveling too but it’s not really the right time for me to travel right now with my kids still young. However, domestic trips and dining are what we, my family, do quite often.
Japan is one country I wish to visit one day. My hubby has been there and he just loves the food.
