Thousand layers of CAKE! (And Some Cheesecake Too!)

Ever had a “thousand-layer cake” before? Well, until my trip to Taiwan, I didn’t even know what it was. Thanks to my wonderful sister Luisa, the same day I got off the plane, two packages were delivered to her door. One package was a “thousand-layer” cake and the other was a package containing two cheese cakes from “Dawn Cake“. I am not sure where exactly my sister got the “thousand-layer” cake, I tried doing some research online, but turned up zip. So I am just going to assume the bakery is called “Deep Blue” since thats what it said on the box.

At first glance, the “thousand-layer” cake looks like layers upon layers of crepes. In between each layer, you have a rich honey-flavored cream and sprinkles of powdered sugar on top. It doesn’t look like a very fancy cake, but it tastes fantastic. It smooth and moist in texture and lightly sweetened.  Taiwanese are not typically known to consume very sweets foods, so their desserts tend to be less “sugary” than the ones we have back in the States.

thousand layer cake! sinfully delicious.

As you probably noticed, it says “Happy Birthday” on there. We were celebrating a few birthdays that afternoon, which explains why that is on there. Thousand-layer cakes are very popular in Taiwan, you can find them in cafe’s too. The picture below shows the “thousand layer” cake from 85 degree cafe, which is a very popular chain of cafes with an excellent selection of desserts. (Check out the site, it’ll make your mouth water) This cake has a honey glaze at the top instead of powdered sugar. Still very delicious.

The cheese cake looks a bit different than what we normally have in the US. It looks more like an actual cake. It is very rich and full of cheese flavor. If you ask me, I didn’t quite like it that much. It is very good, if you love cheese cake. I don’t, so you won’t see me raving about it.

Taiwanese Cheese cake

As I mentioned before, there were two cheese cakes, but I decided to just show one of them because I didn’t care for the other one. It had raisins and I don’t like them. Give me thousand layer cake I’ll devour it in 10 seconds; put raisins in it, I’ll gag and puke in less than five.

If you ever visit Taiwan and are craving some sweets, be sure to get some thousand-layer cake. Its definitely worthwhile if you never had it. The cheese cake on the other hand, I think I’ll stick with Cheesecake Factory’s Banana Cream Cheesecake…because its more like a pie than cheese cake.
