Chipotle: The OTHER Mexican Fast Food

Chipotle Mexican Grill is possibly the BEST Mexican fast food chain this side of the world. According to the Orange County Register (our local news paper), Chipotle ranked very high on the “nutrition” list due to their commitment to organic foods and the sourcing of local produce. I don’t know about you, but this gives me more reason to support their business. Ironically, McDonalds was one of their original “majority investors” until a few years ago. Pretty funny huh? I don’t think ORGANIC when I think McDonalds.

So what exactly is Chipotle anyway? You are basically looking an “assembly-line” style restaurant where you pick the type of dish you want (burrito, taco, salad, bowl, fajitas) and customize it. You start with rice and beans (black, pinto, none), then move on to the meats (carnitas/pork, steak, barbacoa/spicy shredded beef, chicken or none). Next, you choose your fixin’s (4 different types of salsas, peppers/onions, sour cream, cheese, lettuce or guacamole). Then wrap things up with either a drink (they do serve beer by the way) and/or lime-salted tortilla chips. That is pretty much it. There isn’t a huge variety of dishes to choose from, but you can customize your dish any way you like, giving you a very “personalized” dining experience. My personal favorite is the Bowl with rice, black beans, carnitas, pico de gallo, corn salsa and lettuce. I try to cut out the cheese, guac and flour tortilla because of the extra fat and calories those things pack.

I probably hit this joint about once or twice a month…some times more. I don’t get tired of it because I can switch around the ingredients to cater to my dining mood. The typical meal runs around $6 after taxes without any drinks, so it isn’t too bad considering the amount of food you get. They literally have hundreds of locations, with the Cerritos, CA restaurant being my usual dining location.
