‘Tasty’: The Tatty Teddy Bear Cake

We’re at it again! The last epic cake that my partner in crime (Emily) and I tackled was Wall-E. This time, we got commissioned to do a bear (a “From Me to You” bear to be specific, the Tatty Teddy) for a birthday and it was just as fun and satsifying. The planning and research took about 2 hours and we whipped up a bear face prototype (using crispy rice treats… yes, that’s with a ‘c’ and yes, it’s crispy rice, not rice crispy… yay generics) and gave him a name (Tasty) before the night was over. Once we knew we had a very cute figure, we took a day off and then got back to work after that.

Specs

The body is a six layer cake with simple, store-bought vanilla frosting. The head, ears, nose, arms, legs, and tail are all made of crispy rice treats (recipe: 5 cups of cereal, 4 tbsps of butter, and 16oz of marshmallows) and molded by hand. I don’t know if anyone has told you but molten marshmallow may as well be the edible equivalent of napalm. So kids, please let the crispy rice treats cool down a bit before shaping out bear body parts.

Once we got all the parts assembled and the body’s shape roughed out by a bread knife, we proceeded to mix a real attractive light-purplish-grey frosting to pipe the base coat and the fur.

Assembling the cake was very cool. Since the body was made of vanilla, chocolate, and yellow cake, it resembled a giant bumble bee at first and not much of a bear however the crispy rice ears, snout, feet, and arms really tied the cake together after we skewered them on. Once the base coat was laid out, we Em piped on the fur. This was the most painstaking process and it took a couple hours to get done. She did a fantastic job as you can see and even in the face of adversity (aka looming deadline) it came out perfect.

What we would do different next time
We could have used a few more skewers in the head as it was kind of wobbly on the trip over. Also instead of skewers, maybe use hollow straw-like things like the pros do. The cake was also a bit on the sweet side due to the sheer amount of frosting we used to get the fur to look the way it did. We went through 5 cans of frosting for this cake total!

Okay, okay, enough blabber, show me MORE pics!

A ton more pics up on my Flickr set. Let me know what you think! What should be our next cake?!

Wow, that's two things with peanut butter. 3. When you eat too much, you... * Bounce up and down to compact the things in my stomach in hope that I can create enough room for dessert.
